What is mindfulness?

Mindfulness is the basic human ability to exist fully in the present moment, to know where we are and what we are doing, and not to be overwhelmed by what is happening around us.
Although attaining focus is something we all have by nature, it is easily accessible to us if we practice mindfulness meditation every day.
Whenever you bring awareness about what you are experiencing directly through your senses, through your thoughts and feelings, you are attaining mindfulness. And there is growing research showing that when you train your brain to be alert, you are actually repairing the structure of your brain.

Fundamentals of Mindfulness Meditation

Mindfulness helps us to put a connection between us and our reactions, breaking down our conditional responses. Here's how you put mindfulness together for use every day:

1. Set aside some time. You do not need a pillow or a meditation bench, nor do you need any special equipment to perfect your perceptive powers — but       you do need to set aside time and space.

2. Recognize the present situation as it is. The purpose of mindfulness is not to silence the mind, or to try to achieve a state of eternal tranquility. The goal     is to aim for attention to the present moment, without judging.

3. Let your judgments pass. When we see judgments coming up during our process, we can write them down, and let them pass.

4. Return to the present moment as it is. Our minds are often drawn to thoughts. That’s why attention is a habit of going back, often, to the present.

5. Be kind to your wandering mind. Do not judge yourself by any of the thoughts that arise; just practice what your mind is wandering, and bring it back           gently.

Many who begin to meditate find it difficult to remain silent, to dwell on their deepest thoughts and feelings, to do nothing at all - the very things that, funnily, the mind often contradicts. For a beginner, mindfulness meditation may at first seem strange, maybe even scary, but that's fine. People have been meditating for some 3,000 years, and no doubt many have been plagued by feelings of insecurity, fear, or wonder what the first thinkers often felt.
